Number of EV charging stations continues to grow, while gas stations decline

ChargePoint has just announced that it has added the 30,000th charger to its network in the US...

...the overall number of fueling stations in the US has, since 1994, "decreased from more than 200,000 to a little more than 150,000 sites." The Wall Street Journal got an estimate that there are only about 90,000 publicly accessible gas stations in the US.

I am hoping to see more and more combination QC stations (CCS & CHAdeMO), and we need a universal way to get real-time status information, too. Just finding these is the hardest part of taking longer trips in an EV.

The low price might have something to do with it. If you run a gas station (or any business, really) you have to make at least enough profit to cover your costs, and it's easier to do that in a high-volume location. If your volume's low, it becomes a case of "why bother?"

There also seem to be a number of operators who almost drive themselves out of business. For instance, one place that was convenient for me recently replaced their perfectly functional pumps with 'upgraded' ones that blare TV programs at you, AND raised their prices about 20 cents/gal. Now I (and from the looks of things, many other people) go a couple miles down the road...
