Although not a traditional helicopter, a V22 Osprey is faster at 274kts vs the X2s 250 in level flight and 260 in a shallow dive.

...well, in a hover, the Osprey actually *is* a true helocopter (ha,ha).

...what amazes me is that they can "fold" those huge rotors and yet not have them come apart when operating!

Love Ospreys, I saw one parked at an airshow but have yet to see one fly.

...U.S.Marine Corp only at the moment.

...they did some flight testing near here and had one crash 8-Apr'00 at a local airfield killing all 19 on-board. The plane was stationed at MCAS Yuma, AZ.

...thanks, I *didn't* know the USAF had "bought into" the program. It has had a l-o-n-g and controversial development, marred by many, many accidents and problems.

...one Marine detachment is at MCAS Yuma, AZ, (our hometown) and that crash happened at the Marana, AZ, airport just up/across I-10 highway from our house.

...there was a lot of "hate & discontent" expressed by helo pilots who didn't want anything to do with the MV-22 "Osprey," because of it's litany of problems.

USMC fielded in 2000
USAF fielded in 2009

The Air Force used to use the local air strip for training on the Ospreys, they would fly over my house on their way back. Strange sounding bird, cross between a helecopter twump and a prop planes buzz.

After trying to fly one on a flight simulator I have I fully understand why there were a lot of crashes.
