Why not use a bicycle? Going down the hill would obviously be much nicer, and a regular bicycle isn't too hard to push up a hill.

I would totally walk that distance.

It would be a win on so many fronts: health, money, wear and tear on car, environment, ability to enjoy your surroundings, time to wind down and think about life. You would probably lengthen your life by 10 years just by doing this one thing. It's almost ridiculous to not walk it.

I biked/walked a similar distance for years. Really enjoyed it, just a bit of exercise really made the day better. FWIW my worst mpg ever is about 0.85 mpg, but that was in my boat (and it normally does 2.5mpg when cruising, but pulling tubes/skis. . . )
