A Year in the life of my iS (AKA Hypermiling works!)

My 1994 318iS was bought at the end of January 2011 with 113472 Miles on it.

this post presents a rundown of what it's cost me over the last 12 months

The car has served as a
daily driver for my Girlfriend,
a weekend commuter for me to go to my unit.
a TRACKDAY Car (1 at Knockhill, and some laps of the nurburgring)
a Grand Tourer (completing a weeklong 2600 mile trip round Switzerland)

it has completed 16979 miles in my ownership, at an average of 39.69 mpg (imp)

being a bit of a sad person, I've kept track of the car using spritmonitor.de (Details: BMW - 3er - 318iS - Spritmonitor.de)

I thought I'd list my costs here- so far hypermiling has saved me £280.19($439.80) this year... meaning that the Tax and Major service this year have been "for free"

The car has worked out at approx £0.24/mile($0.377) Including 100% depreciation of the purchase price. This means that over the 12 months the car has cost

£3970.30($6232.49) or £330.86($519.38)per month

thsi works out around about the same as the monthly repayments on a similarly specced 2008 318i- BEFORE it turns a wheel

Tech specs

m42 1800cc 4cyl

5speed manual

3.45 Diff

Fuel consumption (urban) 26.2 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 45.6 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 35.8 mpg
0 - 62 mph 11.3 seconds
Top speed 125 mph
Cylinders 4
Valves 16 v
Engine power 140 bhp

Cd 0.30

Purchase Price

£513 ($805) total car was £450 + auction fees.

this works out at £0.03/mile ($0.047/mile)

Repairs and Servicing
130.058 2x 205/60/15 91H tyres fitted £94,00

129.782 5L 10w40 Castrol GTX- Bargain at £10 for 4 L £12,50 ($19.60)

129.215 2 new 20"wipers £6,00 ($9.42)

127.619 MOT £50 New Brake Backing Plate/Handbrake mech £30 Fitting, horn repair/new brakelines £150 £230,00 ($361)

122.038 2x Engine Mounts replaced. Both original ones Sheared off £40,00 (($62.80)

121.900 £80 Exhaust Rear Section £40 Track Control Arm Bushes £42 Front Balljoints £70 Fitting £232,00 ($364.29)

119.150 Oil Filter Air Filte Sparkplugs 5L 10w40 Semi Synth £40,00($62.80)

Total cost £654.50($1027.49)

this works out at £0.04/mile ($0.063/mile)

Tax

£230.75 ($362.25)

This would have been lower if I'd purchased it as 1x 12 month, rather than 2x 6 months

this works out at £0.01/mile ($0.016/mile)

Fuel Costs

£2572 ($4037.16) at an average of 39.69mpg(imp)

this works out at £0.1514/mile ($0.2377/mile)

If I had only managed to do the combined MPG (imp) of 35,8, it’d have cost me an additional £280.19($439.80) (an additional £0.0165/mile($0.025/mile)

Given how easy it is to edit a wiki, I take that with a pinch of salt

Carfolio.com claims 10 secs (1991 has same lump as mine, as opposed to the 1.9 m44 facelift iS)
1991 BMW 318is 16v Coupé E36 Technical specifications

its apparently only 1240kg..

I'm starting to grudgingly accept that its an OK car, and certainly has enough poke for the Mrs to experience RWD without too much issue.

For comparison, the 535i trackcar (200ish BHP) is listed as 7.4secs to 60 and 1610kg its not quite at 39/6mpg though
