You can't make this up.
One of the lines of the Rotterdam metro system ends in the town of Spijkenisse. To save costs the terminal was not dug deep in the unstable clay ground but rather high up in the air.
An artist made two large bronzepolyester sculptures in the shape of a whale's tail to complement the end of the line.
Last night something miraculous happened. One metro liner burst through the end stop and instead of dropping down to ground level it came to rest on top of the sculpture...

There were no passengers and the train driver was uninjured.
The name of the sculpture is 'Saved by a Whale's Tail'...

Indeed, polyester:

The sculpture Saved By a Whale’s Tail, is made of polyester and is the work of Maarten Struijs. The tails were placed in the water at the end of the metro tracks in 2002.

But I bet it hardly rests on the tail; most likely the weight of the second coach prevents it from dipping down.
 .
The metro line was supposed to get extended all the way to Hellevoetsluis, but when that plan was abandoned they ordered a work of art instead. Wasn't a bad call

Were the two whales the same height originally? If so, then it looks like they were designed to catch runaways.

No. The artist commented that if the metro had run on the other track it would have likely just pushed that tail away and then drop down into the water 10 meters below.
It is made of polyester, quite unique in safety barriers.
