Ecomodder has definitely helped get me excited about improving FE and has guided me on how best to achieve it. I'd struggled to get a 90-day average FE of 54MPG+ with my Honda VX, and it took me a couple of years to get there. Now with my Jetta, I've only filled up ... 6? times, I think? ... and both my 90-day and my lifetime average has exceeded the FE of the Honda. Practically no mods, compared with quite a few on the Honda. SentraSE-R is right, the TDIs are MPG beasts !!
Nach,
I came this close to buying a VX new back in the day. Sweet car with tall gears! I opted for a CRX SI(found a nice 88 used for the right price). Got 36mpg in the CRX and I had NO IDEA about hypermiling back then. It was a FUN car and I miss it! (I've owned 3 Accords and 7 civics)I was a lurker on TDIclub.com for a while while I played with running WVO(veggie oil) in my old Mercedes 300d's. I found a broke TDI (the 01 Beetle) for $1500 and $3000 later it's running great but was still my backup to my Benz. I totalled the Benz a few weeks ago(Thank God i was in that tank!!) and have since purchased the 06 Jetta TDI DSG for the GF and just picked up the 96 Passat for my commuter(they seem rare but I'm not sure). I love the Bigger Passat!! Hope I can get some high mpg's outta it Just filled up 2nd time and got 856 miles on that tankfull. 19.1 gallons(venting the tank. I think i can get 20gal total) = 44.8mpg. Now that I got a figure driving normal I'm gonna try some shifting at 2k & "pulse and glide" to see if I can better the 44.8mpg I checked the air filter and it looked like someone threw it in the mud and stomped on it and it was a KnN cleanable type. My mechanic said "get rid of that POS!" and put a regular paper filter type in it. I'm doing that today. Going to my parents in central Alabama Sunday for Spring break with the Family but gonna take the 22mpg Toyota van
Anyone ever done a TDI motor swap into a 01 Sienna?? lol!!

Thank you euromodder!
I think so too. I want to construct a rear wing on the Beetle like Ernie Rogers did to lessen drag. then shoot for 60+

Where can I find a step-by-step of this "nut behind wheel" adjustment?

Thanks

It's just a "tune up" on your driving habits. Here and here are some good guides.

Welcome neighbor! Winter Park is just a lil west of us (Titusville).

Most of what i did was shift at 2000rpm, don't drive over 65mph, pulse and glide when you can, coast in neutral down hills, pump the tires up to 45psi, no AC with windows up, and turn the engine off at long lights.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not gonna drive like this all the time. I just wanted to see if the Beetle could get better than 50mpg. It CAN!!
Good luck to you!! Let us know how it works out :-)

hahahahahahaha...i get it now. I'm the "nut behind the wheel". I took this more literally. As if there was an adjustment to the steering column or something that would improve handling.

LMAO! yea I too wish it was as simple as some nut adjustment. Adjusting my driving(Nut behind the wheel) is a constant battle and takes concentration. I am trying to get in the habit of a better driving style. At least I know now that the car is able to get good mpg's.

I've been adjusting the nut for almost a year now, it's a continual learning process and a great challenge in many ways.
