dirt simple e-bike

When I went to go check out a forklift motor, I saw that there was a smaller motor there from the pump.

It looked like the right size for a making a pretty powerful eletric bicycle.

I was wondering if anyone has done a REALLY simple/cheap electric bike.

I am thinking 3 batteries for 36 volts, with some sort of an allon/alloff power switch.

Use the pedals to get up to speed, then flip on the power for cruising - no fancy/expensive electronics or anything.

Any suggestions on a good way to do this?

-Ben

This might help you out.

Part 2.

As far as batteries check the local fire alarm dealers. Metro suggested this and I was able to get all the batteries I want when they don't pass the required test. Most systems have 2 batteries and if one is bad they replace both so there's a good chance to get a good battery when they check the systems. I can also buy them out right for 18 bucks for a 12v 12ah battery.

WOW!!! I am so inspired by that bike! Need to start gathering parts...

What I like best is the utter simplicity and ingenuity of it all- especially the built-in regen!

Great link, Lazarus.

And excellent news about finding a source of free, used batteries.

Would of never though about the batteries if you had not brought up the fire alarms business.
