Eh. Insights. I love their FE...but...I'm not sure I'll ever get over the whole hybrid thing. I will take a good gas engine or almost any turbodiesel over a hybrid 100% of the time. Personal thing.

great tank for sure. i suggest getting an Ultragauge but some prefer the scangauge. it allows me to adjust to road conditions without affecting FE.
i don't think wiper delete will help. pretty much a dead zone that low on the windshield.
my drive is 95% highway.

Nice tank!

I'm going to look at this TDI today:

2001 VW TDI BEETLE

I don't know what P & G would do to a diesel, but I'd definitely EOC up to every light. Even with a mostly highway commute, if you EOC, your next post will be "Broke a thousand miles on this tank"
I increased my mileage by like 10 mpg just by shutting mine off at lights, but my commute has lots of lights.

I dont. Thats a good idea tho. Ill do a bit a research. I plan on keeping the car forever so it would be a smart investment.

I think I totally agree with you. I also have room for my 2 big dogs when I fold down the rear seats. Such a practical vehicle.

Yes. Instrumentation is on my list of needs. That should probably be my next purchase. Probably a good call on the wiper delete being silly, too.

Please please pleaseee hold out for a 5 speed! That does look like a nice car, tho. Also, with these cars documentation of service is important, especially timing belts. Its a must do item every 80k miles and its a $800 job. If they dont have paperwork for it being done, negotiate it into the price and get it done like yesterday. The guy I got mine from worked with me on the price because of this. It worked out great in the end.

Hmmm. Maybe I will try to EOC and bump start in 4th gear a bit this tank to experiment. That might get me to the 70 mpg mark!

Lol, it's mainly gonna be driven by my wife. Basically it's a peace offering since I won't let her commute in her Explorer V8 and I've been making her carpool with me in the Black Widow

I'm also looking at a 5-speed 2001 Gen-1 Insight this afternoon for myself, if I can low ball the guy down enough. The IMA is dead, but the car is immaculate. I actually test-drove it about two months ago, but he wanted 2800 bucks for it then, and I didn't buy it. He hasn't sold it yet, and just dropped his price to 2300 bucks. I texted him an offer of 1500 bucks this morning, I'll have to see if he bites

Wish me luck!

Possibly a good way to kill the turbo. You don't really need to EOC to a stop in a diesel as it will DFCO down to idle.

that is a confusing statement. are you telling him not to EOC in gear? i should hope he doesn't do that already.
are you also saying the TDI will go into DFCO, in gear, coming to a stop, with the engine running and be better at saving/using less fuel than EOC? hhhmmmmm. either i am confused about all this or i'm doing something wrong. i get 60 consistently each fill up and i EOC all the time. should i leave it on, coast in gear, idle at the light and save more?

EOC is the most efficient way possible, so is leaving it off at lights.

However, tuning an engine off just after a high load pulse is a good way to run the turbo bearings dry and ruin the turbo. The rule of thumb is to wait 30seconds, this makes EOC'ing a turbo all but impossible. This is especially true for TDi's that are on boost much more often than petrol turbos.

If someone has EOC'd their TDi for 100K+ miles and the turbo is still fine, I'd like to hear it. As it stands, I'll just be content to EOnC my turbos.
