Flying car: 30 mpg (US) on the highway, or 23 mpg (US) flying @ 100 knots

OK, so not only is it a flying/driving curiosity, but the efficiency specs also appear to be noteworthy (for an airplane).

I posted a previous article about a pilot who was pleased to get 20.7 mpg (US) in flight: Yes, Virginia, some pilots DO hypermile...

But this one takes the cake from a "modding" perspective (via ABG):

Quote:
The company has already received 40 orders for the craft that is expected to sell for $194,000. Before you plunk down the refundable 10 grand to reserve your airframe, keep in mind you may have to wait a while before you can start getting 23 mpg at 100 mph. Terrafugia expects to deliver their first flying car sometime in 2010.

that is about the kind of mileage that my friends 4 seater Cessna gets, only it can't drive on the street, and it's real.

Just what we need......"sky rage" instead of road rage. 100 knots = 115 mph....I'd hit it.

Real as in "a real plane" or real as in "exists physically"?

This one exists - the top vid is just an animation, but the bottom vid was shot 2 weeks ago showing a test flight.

There's a contest on to get 100 MPG at 100 MPH in a two-seat aircraft. Most contests have been for the best combination of speed, load, and economy, to attract more entries. This champion got 170 MPH and 48 MPG.
