How to: Post pictures on EcoModder so they never die

With the recent photobucket debockle, I figured that I would write an updated how to on this. We've also updated things on EM to make things much easier for you to post your pictures on the forum, and host them here too. This will ensure that the picture links NEVER break. So, lets get on with it!

Note: These are directions for Chrome. They'll be slightly different in other browsers.

1) Scroll down below where you are writing your post to find the "Manage Attachments" button.

2) This will bring up another window that looks like this. You will have the choice to browse your computer for an image, or paste a URL to another picture you've found on the internet. Both of these options will upload that picture to EcoModder's server, and resize it to 800x600 pixels (if necessary) automatically. With it hosted here, the link will never break. Once you have browsed for your file or pasted your link, click the "Upload" button. If you wish to upload more than one picture, simply browse again or paste another link and hit upload again.

3) Now that the images are uploaded to EM, you can insert them in your post. To do this, right click on the link of the image you uploaded. You can do this in the window that popped up, or below near the "Manage Attachments" button.

4) Click the insert image button above the text box area for your post.

5) Paste your URL into the box that comes up. Congrats, your image is inserted into your post!

3rd party image hosts: they're great for convenience, they suck for longevity/predictability!

Don't trust them for your embedded forum images.

I got burned about 7 or 8 years ago by one image service, and never went back.

I generally post my pictures on my own server. However, for some images I do use Daox's instructions above.

Is this method preferred over creating an Album in your User CP, uploading the image there, and then including a link to the image in your post?

Either is fine in terms of ensuring the image doesn't disappear from your posts. The upload to post method may save a bit of bandwidth.

+1. I spend a fair amount of time (perhaps too much) on a bicycling forum, and when you scan people's signatures apologizing for missing pictures, you realize it's a recurring theme: AOL, Comcast, Webshots, and now Photobucket. People are quick to suggest alternatives like imgur, flickr, etc, but not as quick to realize that theirs might be the next to pull a Martin Shkreli move.

It's direct attachments for me from here on out, even if it doesn't give as much flexibility as third-party sharing did.

sure need assistance posting link

I found something to share and failed linking it.
1) I was told to left-click on the address of interest. I got that far.
2) I don't know how to paste the URL on the page which comes up after I click 'Manage Attachments' so I can click on the 'UPLOAD' button.
Appreciate any help. Otherwise it will be after we're beyond COVID before I can get local help.

I've always been jealous of all those giant pics everybody put on here since it maxes out at a 100k size when you upload to this site . . . . but hey, at least all of mine are still here from the day I posted the first one!

I use Imgur to post on Hobie's owner forum but I really don't care if those end up getting deleted

Got it now, or should I do a write-up when I get a chance?
