Junk 24V kick scooter

I just found a junked-out scooter in a dumpster on my lunch break!

It's the style where you just stand on it. The cover was off, and it has 2 batteries inside, so I'm assuming it's most likely a 24V system.

Even if the electronics and batteries are both shot, I would think it's a decent little permanent magnet motor and belt drive on the back.

Might make a good generator for an exercise bike generator setup. Who knows, maybe all it needs is new batteries!

Sounds like a fun project! Often, these kind of items are thrown out for no good reason. Most electronics that end up in the trash are in perfect working order - just tossed away because they look old & used..

I had one of those that I used to parking lot scoot with... See how tight I could cut into a turn, etc... Fun, if slow.

This one is a little bigger than a Razor.









Mice had been nibbling on some of the wire insulation. I only saw one wire eaten straight through. I just stripped the two ends of that and twisted them together.

The scooter uses 2 x 12V / 12AH sealed lead-acid batteries. I pulled both out and tested them. Do you think 0.58V qualifies as dead on a 12V battery?
Even hooking them up in parallel to a Yellow Top, I was only able to get them as high as 7 volts.

Chris WOULD put a 500 amp controller in there....

It looked like there were 6 or so wires going to the motor.

Maybe a remote control car guy could weigh in here, but what kind of motor is that?

I noticed that it is sort of hurky-jerky at low speeds almost like it's a stepper motor.

I can't see it well enough to make a guess. Controller only has a SINGLE mosfet? Wow.

Hey Ben,

I had some SLA batteries that were down to 2V total! I left them on a trickle charger for about a week. Happen to check last night and ITs taking a charge! So I started with 20 SLA batteries, tested them, though I had 9 junk ones. Now Ive charged them all up! all sitting above 12V.

So if you have more time then spare batteries, you might be able to get these back. Enough to play with them.

My 20 cells are just a test load for my charger so i dont really care about them.

Nevyn, there are two boards on the scooter. The one you can clearly see is for charging, battery connections, and feeds out to the control board, which is down out of the way where it is hard to see.
