My car uses gel cells that are inside the passenger compartment, but sunk below the back seat. (Where the gas tank was.)

That is then covered with 3/4" plywood with carpet over that.

The one time I accidentaly shorted 144V, I was glad that there was that chunk of plywood between me and the battery terminal.
