Wash your hands/face/body, get the baking soda, THEN grab your camera so we all can see!

Are those cells bone dry!?!?!? Wow, that is what heck of a boom. Did you have to tow it home, or did you just bypass the battery and continue?

Yes, big boom. Tow Geo and tow rope to get it home. I think I'll put the alum battery back in to replace the exploded one....

Wow. What do you think happened?
Cell reversal & overheating?

Yeah, I'll go with that.....
I was really pushing my luck with that battery as it was and am not at all surprised it happened. I am actually pretty lucky that the one I converted to alum didn't do that before the conversion: it was showing way too low a voltage after commute as well. This gives me even more incentive to relocate the 2 batteries in the trunk outside passenger compartment.

My car uses gel cells that are inside the passenger compartment, but sunk below the back seat. (Where the gas tank was.)
That is then covered with 3/4" plywood with carpet over that.
The one time I accidentaly shorted 144V, I was glad that there was that chunk of plywood between me and the battery terminal.

Wow. Well, before I got the battery pack monitor, I reversed cells in a couple of batteries (2 or maybe 3).
When reversal happens, I believe you're effectively charging that cell at whatever amperage you're drawing from the pack at the moment. (For me, that could be anywhere from typically 75-200+ amps!) Which means that battery is going to get awfully warm, awfully quick plus it'll likely be gassing like crazy and building pressure in the case. POW! :O
