My next commuter will be a Yaris... and this is coming from someone who has the twin to the Cobalt.
My rented Yaris averaged 42 mpg with an automatic, including my nightly climb to 4,675 feet. That's about 6 mpg better than my Saturn Ion (sister to the Cobalt) gets with a 5-speed.
