In the 70's vehicles with funny names, like Toyota and Honda, started appearing in America. American manufacturers made big cars that were unreliable. They claimed that it was impossible to make cars that get 30 miles per gallon, and they said that cars with air bags would be so expensive that only the ultra-rich could afford them.
Since then something has changed with American manufacturers. Their cars are many more times reliable than those funny import cars that came in the 70's. In addition, most safety features implemented since then have been initiated by the auto makers themselves.
Something changed their attitude. What was it? Who benefited? Why?
