Emissions and safety standards are miles apart from one side of the ocean to the other. The Tata Nano would be a great fuel efficient car here but it will not pass using the euro design cannot reach highway speeds and is too unstable. Look what happened to the Smart car it gets terrible mileage and is the size of a motorcycle, that was not the original intent.
Comparing apples and oranges it is great GM stepped up to take the lead in FE it will cause more competition for someone to top them and take back that market share, good old capitalism at its finest.
