Man, in that blue, all I can think of is:
I've also noticed a lot of hatchbacks in recent years coming with a small kammback. My sisters impreza has one. I actually asked if I could extend it with plexi so that it would be invisible and she still said no. :/ But then again, she's happy with 25 mpg from a car.

Let's do it already.

botsapper strikes again! Cool!
Not likely any visibility problems. I can still see the horizon (just) through my rearview mirror under my car's Kammback.

Class-leading fuel economy means hugely different things on either side of the Atlantic.
On diesels and for this size of car, you'd be looking at 3.3 L/100km (71mpg) or better to be class leading in Europe.
Gasoline, small car, be looking at 4.3 L/100km (55 mpg) or better.
Meanwhile in NA ....

Sad but true. Over here, 41 mpg highway would lead the subcompact B class.

Emissions and safety standards are miles apart from one side of the ocean to the other. The Tata Nano would be a great fuel efficient car here but it will not pass using the euro design cannot reach highway speeds and is too unstable. Look what happened to the Smart car it gets terrible mileage and is the size of a motorcycle, that was not the original intent.
Comparing apples and oranges it is great GM stepped up to take the lead in FE it will cause more competition for someone to top them and take back that market share, good old capitalism at its finest.

This car will be sold on both sides of the pond, same platform. So safety regs are no reason for our relatively poor mileage. Diesel emissions regs, yes.
The issue is that North America will only get the most powerful gas engine option(s) which can be fitted to this platform.
We have convinced ourselves (hat tip to the automakers' marketing departments and the motoring press ... arguably one in the same) that 0-60 mph in more than 10 seconds is "slow". It didn't used to be.
