Perhaps some extra straps side-to-side would help? I've wondered about using fencing wire, stretched taut by 'bottle-screws'.
I still like the basic idea - but I can see how lack of rigidity/support could be an issue...
In the areas where burning occurred, surely you could just cut that area away, or arrange for something to hold the material away from the exhaust?
