Mine is mounted on the steering column, slightly closer than where hawk2100n put his. You might appreciate the fact that mounting it slightly more forward, on the column, means you can run the wire behind the gauge without seeing it hardly at all. I completely agree with the guys suggesting the gauge cluster. It's the safest and most effective location for a gauge you will check very often. That side vent you are considering really is a bit farther away than ideal. I tried other locations first. This is by far the best and safest.
