Mine is mounted on the steering column, slightly closer than where hawk2100n put his. You might appreciate the fact that mounting it slightly more forward, on the column, means you can run the wire behind the gauge without seeing it hardly at all. I completely agree with the guys suggesting the gauge cluster. It's the safest and most effective location for a gauge you will check very often. That side vent you are considering really is a bit farther away than ideal. I tried other locations first. This is by far the best and safest.

I have mine on velcro on top of the dash above the gauges. It's as close to a heads-up display as possible. I can also easily reach the buttons around the wheel instead of through it.

I think I'll put it on the steering column as California98Civic says since it hides the wire. I was debating putting it on top of the vent but I realized that I didn't want to drill any holes or have random pieces of metal sticking out or it which may ruin the dashboard of the car. Is the velcro pretty sturdy so it's stable whenever I press any buttons without worrying that it will just fall back or anything?

mount above steering wheel

PaleMelanesian,
Are you still using the same mount, and how is the velcro holding up?

I have a new car now, so no...

but the same velcro is on the same scangauge and holding up. The on-dash velcro I had to replace for the new car, but the gauge's side is still ok. Good stuff they include with the SG.
