It's actually an open deck, not closed (see pics lin link below). But having an iron block allowed them to not need sleeves and to siamese the cylinder bores to make it smaller. As a PR stunt, Ford took one on an airplane as a carry-on luggage:

Ford boasts that it is small enough to fit on a sheet of A4 paper. (I assume this means the profile of the block alone, when viewed from the top).
