No it can't. That article was BS.

The advantages of modern Diesels over a Prius or any comparatively-sized hybrid are not BS.

About the BMW vs. Prius: I must confess I got quite impressed how such a barge was managed to keep more fuel-efficient than a compact...

Mazda is doing well enough on their own after they split ways several years ago. Ford went with using smaller turbocharged versions of the Duratec, Ecoboost. Mazda went with more efficient N/A engines, Skyactiv.

Power density is a very silly thing to compare. It really only matters when comparing engines of very similar displacement, the same engine cycle, and whether or not it is naturally aspirated. It greatly favors small displacement, high revving engines.

I can go buy a production car this afternoon that gets 400+ hp/L. It's absurdly low-tech and I don't want to commute in it though.

It's actually an open deck, not closed (see pics lin link below). But having an iron block allowed them to not need sleeves and to siamese the cylinder bores to make it smaller. As a PR stunt, Ford took one on an airplane as a carry-on luggage:

Ford Built An Engine So Small They Were Able To Send It Through Airport Security

Ford boasts that it is small enough to fit on a sheet of A4 paper. (I assume this means the profile of the block alone, when viewed from the top).

Mazda still has some technical cooperations with Ford. The current overseas version of the Ranger, for example, is also offered as a Mazda (BT-50) in some markets.

Do you think your real world FE will improve enough to justify the trade in?

I think I would rent one to see how much the mileage improvement actually was in a real world scenario.
