Checking the clearance, and adjusting if necessary, is emphatically not the same thing as a valve job. That involves taking off the cylinder heads, removing valves & springs, and lapping or grinding each valve & seat so that they make good contact. Typically you'd also check valve guides for wear, replace the seals, etc.
