In the end, sulfur reduction is good news. Ten cents per gallon is a small price to pay for less environmental/health damage down the road.

Well, I'd have to agree, though some were bigger piles of crap than others. Nostalgia is fine, but any honest & knowledgable person will have to admit that design & manufacturing standards weren't all that great back then. I grew up working on cars from the '60s, and what was accepted as normal for service intervals on everything from oil changes to valve jobs would probably lead to lawsuits today. Seriously, when was the last time you heard of a modern engine needing a valve job?

My 4A-FE needs the valve clearance checked every 60k, along with the timing belt.

I'll have to second that. I actually think sulfur should've been eliminated from the fuels a long time ago...

Checking the clearance, and adjusting if necessary, is emphatically not the same thing as a valve job. That involves taking off the cylinder heads, removing valves & springs, and lapping or grinding each valve & seat so that they make good contact. Typically you'd also check valve guides for wear, replace the seals, etc.
