That may not actually be true. EG:

While the quote refers to CO2 output, it's reasonable to assume that correlates to energy consumption.
Which is why it sometimes makes sense from a
total energy efficiency perspective to ditch a guzzler for a more efficient new car (depending on how much of a guzzler it is).
