Wish I could find it again, but I just recently read an article where some construction sites were using solar + battery power systems as an alternative to running generators (obviously in locations where the power companies hadn't run any power yet). If it's going to be used only once a year or less, with no other usage at all, you're right... no point in owning it. But if it could be used for other things, it could be worth it... UPS for a portion of your house's power, construction power supply, camping power supply, portable power in case of disaster, etc.
