Don't forget: the "car guys and girls" who designed your cooling system sized it for a worst case scenario: climbing out of Death Valley, with a full load of passengers & cargo, with the A/C on, and a giant stuffed Barney tied on the roof.

That's why the car guys & girls are now putting active shutters on newer cars. Because it's a big waste to have a gaping open maw on the front of the car all the time. And a variable block still permits "worst case scenario" operation.

If your driving isn't "worst case", you're safe to partially block the grille if you do it progressively and monitor the results.
