This exact same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago (minus the engine idling part... I would never do that ). I think you're right - the key only opened the lock "half way", and then it got jostled back to the "locked" position

In my case, I drove for a bit, stopped somewhere briefly (leaving the key in the car). The door was locked when I tried to open it again!
