They may be able to detect lean burn, but the MPG calculations will be inaccurate while in lean burn mode.
The reason: UG & SG calculate fuel consumption based on air consumption, and assume an unchanging air:fuel ratio (stoichiometric) for the most part.

So finally burnt off the maiden tank and have added my first fuel log entry.
Granted, I have nothing to accurately gauge economy yet...but according to the odometer versus pump I ran 436 miles on 10 gallons. So I'm starting off looking at 43mpg. I'm quite happy with that as a base.

Got my tax returns back, so today I ordered an UltraGauge for the car.
I've been trying out basic hypermiling techniques and usually keep the RPM's under 2500 while cruising, shifting around 2000. I've done more driving-with-load than anything but there are a few nice stretches on my regular commute for some engine-off coasting. According to the pump and odo, 46mpg the last few tanks.
The way people drive around here is horrible though, I feel like I'm gonna be run off the road even doing a solid 60mph in the right lane. Even at 9-10pm at night, you'd think I83 is the Autobahn. I'll probably be investing in some red reflective tape...

Gah...worst tank yet...just shy 43mpg.
So embarrassing; leaving work, started up the car and went back to the trunk, door shut and wouldn't open back up. Apparently, when it's cold the locks don't fully unlock with the twist of the key and I got locked out. Took me 30 minutes to wedge the door open and find something to use to hit the button..30 minutes of wasted fuel.
On a better note, I've got the UltraGauge in. Learned the grille block needed to be opened up. Temperatures right now hover between 185-195 versus the previous 210 with the original block. Really nice to know when the car is in lean burn too!

I think many here have this same issue, I know I do to.
Good #s for this time of year.

This exact same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago (minus the engine idling part... I would never do that ). I think you're right - the key only opened the lock "half way", and then it got jostled back to the "locked" position
In my case, I drove for a bit, stopped somewhere briefly (leaving the key in the car). The door was locked when I tried to open it again!

Grille block will probably have to open up more soon. 50-60 temps around here and engine temp is spiking just a hair over 200 degrees F again on some stretches.

I definitely know better for next time...not exactly sure why I started the car before I loaded up my gear into the trunk...big brain fart that day!

I'm pretty excited with what I'm seeing so far. With the Ultra-Gauge and warmer weather rolling in, I've seen two consecutive 50mpg tanks!
Of course...I kept trying to do better with my commute to Baltimore and now I'm working out of Enola, PA, soon to be working out of Harrisburg within a couple months. Hopefully I can keep pulling 50mpg on this style of commute; more city driving, hours are more congested, but we shall see.
Hopefully I can attain some eco building materials here soon and start doing some aero mods!

Nice. With all that highway, aeromods will help more than a "regular" car...
The more you reduce the load on the engine at speed, the more you can stay in the magical lean burn mode.
---
Also: are you also manually calculating your MPG on your fuel receipts? Because the UG isn't entirely accurate on a lean-burn engine.
