They didn't have Honda MTF back when my 1993 transmission was designed and built, so I just run a high quality 10w-40 in the gearbox. I tried royal purple 5w-30 and hated it (stiff shifting). So I drained and strained and used it in the engine on my next oil change. I think on newer engines, after 2000, I would always go with the Honda MTF because they designed the transmission with that stuff in mind. But if you want to experiment go ahead. A few miles with something that turns out less than ideal won't cause any harm with our very mild and kind driving style. Hell, my transmission isn't even engaged for maybe more than half the miles the car travels.
