Just one question. Are you sure you spec'd for gear oil in your transmission. Most newer car and light trucks use motor oil or ATF in their manual transmissions.

I looked it up and it said GL-4... I'll look it up again to make sure.

Well here is what the bottle says.
I would like to note, my car shifts so much smoother now that I changed it. And on the drive home from work about 45 mins ago, it wasn't grinding going into 3rd. Hell, it may not even be grinding in the first place, I don't even know what a proper grind feels like LOL. Oh problems of owning my first manual.

Ok now I'm really, really confused. I'm reading that some people say it's fine, some people are saying it does permanent damage, I'm so confused I really don't know what to believe. I would like some input from anyone...

I used the $7/qt stuff from Honda the first time. I'm now running 0-20W with 2 cans of mos3 added to it. I may switch again, because I can feel the lower drag once it gets up to temp. Long story short, use the Honda stuff, unless you feel like experimenting.

What does the owners manual say to use. Can't go wrong with that. Don't have one download one.
Page 143 Maintenance section.

If Honda M T F is not available, you may use an API service SG or SH
grade motor oil with a viscosity of SAE 10W-30 or 10W-40 as a
temporary replacement. However, motor oil does not contain the proper
additives and continued use can cause stiffer shifting. Replace as soon as convenient.

I downloaded one from here virus scan shows clean. Download at your own risk.

They didn't have Honda MTF back when my 1993 transmission was designed and built, so I just run a high quality 10w-40 in the gearbox. I tried royal purple 5w-30 and hated it (stiff shifting). So I drained and strained and used it in the engine on my next oil change. I think on newer engines, after 2000, I would always go with the Honda MTF because they designed the transmission with that stuff in mind. But if you want to experiment go ahead. A few miles with something that turns out less than ideal won't cause any harm with our very mild and kind driving style. Hell, my transmission isn't even engaged for maybe more than half the miles the car travels.

Torco MTF is what most trans experts on d-series.org recommend. They say honda MTF is not that good.
