Keep in mind, that rating is based on the Japanese fuel economy test cycle, which is famously optimistic.
For comparison, the current Toyota Prius liftback
is rated at 89.4 mpg US on the Japanese system. In the U.S. it has a 50 mpg (21.3 km/L) combined EPA rating.
In that perspective, it kind of takes the wind out of the little Suzuki's sails. I'm not familiar enough with the Kei class of cars to know how the Alto compares to its direct competitors.
