Answering the OP: my family tolerates it and acquaintances usually take pause when they realize I shaved thousands of dollars off my gasoline expenses.

I agree with those who answered this already. If we set up the car and do the technique properly we lose no safety features. Not even for an instant. Two mods are really useful to enhance this: the injector kill switch means you do not key off, and a brake vacuum booster means you'll have an abundance of capacity even on two mile long, fast hills.
