How hot does it get with and without the blocks in place? If I hear the fan starting up then it means its too hot but that can happen without the blocks and the engine running for a long time and/or the air temp being high and you are not moving fast enough to get air moving around the engine to cool it off.

I don't know about the long-term damage but as long as you don't hear the fan coming on all the time for long periods of time, you should be fine. My fan comes on for less than a minute and my temp drops from 204 to 195 very quickly -- usually long enough for me to get out of idle and moving, which cools it off further. The engine prefers warm to cold (but not rip-roaring melting hot!).

(with blocks on, make sure that scangauge has a gauge on coolant temp. If it's hovering too high or close to the point where the fan comes on, I would consider reducing the block size)
