i wonder is haveing the grill blocked hurts city milage cause of all the heat,
with my manual/crank fan? would it make the clutches lock longer and more resistance on the motor?

How hot does it get with and without the blocks in place? If I hear the fan starting up then it means its too hot but that can happen without the blocks and the engine running for a long time and/or the air temp being high and you are not moving fast enough to get air moving around the engine to cool it off.

I don't know about the long-term damage but as long as you don't hear the fan coming on all the time for long periods of time, you should be fine. My fan comes on for less than a minute and my temp drops from 204 to 195 very quickly -- usually long enough for me to get out of idle and moving, which cools it off further. The engine prefers warm to cold (but not rip-roaring melting hot!).

(with blocks on, make sure that scangauge has a gauge on coolant temp. If it's hovering too high or close to the point where the fan comes on, I would consider reducing the block size)

it stays at 182-184 on the scangauge, i travel at night so it dont get hot out.
i was just wondering if the fan made a big difference.

my fan dont really kick on, it is not electric.

i have seen it hit 202 before but the motor was off, so that dont count.

That doesn't sound too bad then. The fan can make a difference in FE.

Hello,

I don't think that there is "extra" heat in "city" driving. The fan can pull air through the radiator whether the grill is blocked or not. If the ScanGauge II is saying 180-something them you are perfectly fine.

Hi,

Elsewhere in this forum, there is a thread about air intake temperatures, and a temp of 108F was mentioned as ideal for good fuel economy. If your average fuel economy goes up, then that's what you need to do.

Do you have the 2.4 liter four? My brother has had about four Tacoma's and the earlier ones had that engine -- not one of them did not make it to 300,000 miles. It is a very strong and durable engine. My father-in-law also has had two of them and they last a good long time.

mine is 4x4 so i have the 3rz, 2.7liter.
which 2.4l u talking about the 2rz or the 22re/22r?
cause my 3rz is just a longer stroked 2rz, with a bore is 95 mm and stroke is 95 mm, compared to the 2rz bore is 95 mm and stroke is 86 mm, the 3rz also have counter balances in the motor to make it smoother and about 8 whole hp more and 17 ft/lbs, but the curve comes earlier.

the fan thing may all be in my head but i will drive it with the block for a few more tanks then trry it off for a few to see if it really made a difference.

i just though the clutch fan might cause more drag than good., maye i should buy a billit one loose some weight and the clutch .

well i have netted no real gain maybe .5 mpg, but it did coast faster by like 2-3 mph downhill...maybe.

but i took it off today to see, i think my manual fan is what is not making the gain, next mad may be the fan

Hello,

If you are coasting that much better, I think you will gain more mpg when you find that you can now coast on lesser grades, as well as the ones where you now coast.
