I have a 2004 diesel jetta wagon that we just love to pieces. I routinely get 42-49 mpg, and that includes towing a trailer with 1,000 pounds or more once or twice a month.

Of course, the VW/Diesel/EPA fiasco means there are no new diesels available from VW at the moment. This makes me very sad...

Alternatives?

Of course, we want high FE, and great durability and reliability. Towing abilities are -almost- a must have. We seem to haul a lot of stuff around, so my wagon has been terrific.

We both prefer manual transmissions.

What says the brain trust?

Or do we just have to wait it out until the diesels come back?
If you like them, see if you can find a cheap, barely used TDI VW that someone is unloading because it is no longer "green". Use the controversy to save a boatload.
