New car for wife. We -were- going to get a vw diesel wagon...now what?

My wife's 1999 toyota is about to roll over 200,000 miles and it is starting to show it's age.

I have a 2004 diesel jetta wagon that we just love to pieces. I routinely get 42-49 mpg, and that includes towing a trailer with 1,000 pounds or more once or twice a month.

Of course, the VW/Diesel/EPA fiasco means there are no new diesels available from VW at the moment. This makes me very sad...

Alternatives?

Of course, we want high FE, and great durability and reliability. Towing abilities are -almost- a must have. We seem to haul a lot of stuff around, so my wagon has been terrific.

We both prefer manual transmissions.

What says the brain trust?

Or do we just have to wait it out until the diesels come back?

If you like them, see if you can find a cheap, barely used TDI VW that someone is unloading because it is no longer "green". Use the controversy to save a boatload.

Especially if you don't have emissions testing or inspections in your state. You can get the DPF deleted and run biodiesel.

Almost every VW dealer in US has scores of these cars sitting in their inventory that they cannot sell and are crying about it. If you can delay the purchase for a month or three, you may get a new car at a bargain. I would do two things: 1. wait and monitor this site and the TDI forum at www.tdiclub.com to see how the "fix" is performing; 2: if acceptable, go and look and say to them "boy I really wanted one, but now I guess I'll go and buy a prius..."

Can you not get an almost new low miles lease turn in diesel VW?

I think I have my wife talked into this with her next vehicle. Let some one else eat that approximately $3,000 depreciation hit you take just for driving it off the lot and that next $2,000 to $4,000 hit you take for owning a premium new 0 miles car for the first year or 2.
My wife wants a new Hyundai genesis. I have informed her she can get a 2 year old genesis for around the same price if not less than the price of a new sonata. She likes that idea.

Everyone is acting like all VW diesels are some how evil and that this fiasco is causing all sales to slump. I hear that dealer inventories are piling up.

I say get one before they apply their EPA (Ethanol Production Agency) approved software "fixes" to the engines.
It will likely kill power and fuel economy.

I can't say for sure just yet but I've read that if you run the vehicle on Biosynthetic lubricants it'll get an increase in fuel efficiency, if what Donatos Pizza says about these lubricants also applies to cars:

Case Study: Pizza Plant Goes All In

I'm currently using a RLI (renewable Lubricants Inc.) 5w40 Diesel oil in my Suburban. I think it did make it more efficient, though at the same time I'm sure there was a little 15w40 left in it from before I put Mobil 1 5w40 in.

The local (very big) vw dealer says they are hard to get and sell fast around here. But he's looking.

The ebay prices haven't dropped much, if at all...

I'll have to check with fred's tdi to see if there's a way to tell if it has been reflashed with the new/bad software.
