I removed the file size limit for in-post attachments.
In place of the limit, I set the uploader to attempt to automatically resize images to 800 x 600. The resulting file size will vary based on the original image, but it's reasonable.
If you choose to upload giant photos, it will obviously take a while to upload & process. On vB's recommendations (to minimize server load), I changed the upload form to have just one image "browse & upload" button (previously had 10). That means no more batch uploading, but you can still upload multiple image attachments sequentially in the same post.
I've tested it on a couple of images and the resized images look OK to me. The largest original image I tried was 4032 x 3024 (5 MB). It took a while, but it worked.
So we're trading possibly slightly higher server load for potentially less bandwidth requirements (vs. bigger, embedded album images).
I'll still increase limits in the albums for people who want more than 800x600.
