Yeah, I was talking to Tim about this. I think what we're going to do is:
1) Increase the file size limit for in-post attachments to 1MB. (I think it's like 120 kb now.)
2) Increase the photo album file size limit to 1 MB for everyone, except...
3) Increase the photo album file size limit to 4 MB for site supporters.
And then watch our bandwidth charges.

128kb is plenty for images, especially 2nd gen JPEG 2000 images, just increase the JP2 resolution limit to 1024x768
Then roll out the "other" changes to paid customers

As long as it automatically can convert to whatever the file limits are, I'm ok. I'm Luddite enough that I'd never bother hosting and linking pics anyway, and I wouldn't even try to understand how to reformat them on my own via phone.

For 7 years I have been using Tinypic for hosting a bunch of images I have here on ecomodder, annnnnd at the bottom of their home page is shows they are a Photobucket company.....
Crap. I'm outta town and it would take hours and gigabytes of data to make a change.
It appears Tinypic has not gone bad yet, I just checked my ecomodder posts in a browser I never use (so they don't know it's "me") and the images are still there, so, safe for now.
This sucks.

I have a app on my Droid that is called "Reduce Photo Size" it works well to crop and resize images on my phone, making a 2mb file into a 124KB one with very good results, you gotta really zoom in to see resolution has dropped. My big problem with it is, Reduce Photo lets me leave after making changes without saving it, so about half the time I derp out and then do it all again 3 seconds later, you'd think after 100+ image edits I'd catch on. Takes about 40 seconds to crop, then resize, And Save an image.

Back in the day, I would send the picture to myself via text and it would auto-reduce the size.

I still email phone pics to myself since Apple doesn't support very basic features like bluetooth transfer. Never appreciated the lack of basic features on the iPod, and now the iPhone.

how about this instead...
I removed the file size limit for in-post attachments.
In place of the limit, I set the uploader to attempt to automatically resize images to 800 x 600. The resulting file size will vary based on the original image, but it's reasonable.
If you choose to upload giant photos, it will obviously take a while to upload & process. On vB's recommendations (to minimize server load), I changed the upload form to have just one image "browse & upload" button (previously had 10). That means no more batch uploading, but you can still upload multiple image attachments sequentially in the same post.
I've tested it on a couple of images and the resized images look OK to me. The largest original image I tried was 4032 x 3024 (5 MB). It took a while, but it worked.
So we're trading possibly slightly higher server load for potentially less bandwidth requirements (vs. bigger, embedded album images).
I'll still increase limits in the albums for people who want more than 800x600.
