It was predicated on the centerline main gear and relatively light outrigger gear. *That* was predicated by the high mounted wing position, big mains would be huge and heavy outboard on those wings that are so high in the air.
Note that huge airliners have substantial outboard main gear that can take the abuse of a significantly dropped wing to keep tracking centerline in a forward slip.
The B-52's little outrigger gear would simply break off if you did that to make that transition from crabbing to cross-controlled forward slip to landing. Heck, the wing would break if it did not!
