I'm hoping something like Tesla's solar roof can be developed into a cost effective alternative, because glass should last the life of the house, and it might as well make electricity on the side optimally positioned to catch it.

... I'll be up on Dad's roof this fall to tear off and install asphalt shingles. Code doesn't allow solar on a manufactured home, so that's why he's got his rack-mounted in the field.

I'm hoping the panels covering the majority of my south facing roof extend the life of the roof and keep summer temperatures down.
