Plaster is a generic term including many materials and formulas.

Plaster and wood lath to me contains cement in the mix . Making it “Hard” and water resistant.

Drywall contains gypsum and no cement. Making it “Not hard” and readily absorbent.

However.

Wood lath readily absorbs water. Expanding as it does so, thus cracking the “plaster” causing damage.
