For an overall commuter, the 250 to 300cc displacement range effectively tends to provide a reasonable balance of performance and economy. Too bad these models available in the United States have a more performance-oriented design which ends up being not so suitable for the needs and preferences of a more austere customer, plus they can be also more maintenance-intensive than the dual-purpose motorcycles available in my country within that very same displacement range.
