This thread has inspired me to present another take on the alternator delete idea...

How about a solar hybrid with passive electric propulsion?

Instead of removing the alternator, convert it into an electric motor that can be used to provide 2-5 hp of assist? Plenty of DIY you tube videos on this topic.

For battery power use lithium batteries that can be both charged from a roof mounted solar panel and/or plugging in to the grid via home solar.

For starting the car (which lithium batteries do not like) add supercapacitors to handle the instantaneous amperage spikes.

By theory, you could effectively double that mpg improvement to 20 percent or more since the load on the motor for a given task will be dropped
significantly. Free HP.

I am in the middle of this DIY solar project and hopefully can come back with some noteworthy positive results.
