You may want to talk to the EVDL. 50 miles at 50-55 mph is doable. The general consensus is that 500 pounds of lead is roughly equivalent to a gallon of gasoline, so if you can average an equivalent of 50 mpg, 500 pounds of lead will get you 50 miles (at 100% DOD). Double that to get good battery life, and you're looking at about 1,000 pounds of lead.

Oh, and don't ditch the transmission. Yes, it will sap a bit of energy, but without it, you'll still have to have a differential or something to drive both wheels, and you'll want the gears to keep the motor in its powerband for efficiency.
