My guess - clever ancient engineers provided that space for owner/fixit guy to store a rag there. I like it!
Kudos for keeping the old beast running. We drove 10-20 year old Volvos for years, me doing about 600-800 miles/week commuting. Tools in car, and sometimes I used them to complete the commute. Never regretted a mile of it.
