My guess - clever ancient engineers provided that space for owner/fixit guy to store a rag there. I like it!

Kudos for keeping the old beast running. We drove 10-20 year old Volvos for years, me doing about 600-800 miles/week commuting. Tools in car, and sometimes I used them to complete the commute. Never regretted a mile of it.

Ah the good old days of vacuum operated cars, when you couldn't get the right fm station because you had a leak. I would hate to replace dry rotted hoses on one of those.

I sort of miss the Subaru I used to have (an 05 Impreza sedan). Other than the fuel consumption and lack of cargo space, it was great-- an absolute blast to drive.

The frameless windows are also awesome. It's too bad Subaru eliminated them on the new Corolla-looking Impreza.

I wonder if there isn't another filter element that would have fit into the OEM housing?

I've had to get creative to find parts for my Corvair. By bringing the old part in and digging through boxes, I have found parts that work even though there is nothing in the parts books or cross reference books for that matter.

I'd think the OEM setup would be better in just about every way.

BTW: '65 on up Vairs had frameless windows and the spare in the engine compartment. But even further back, Microbusses had the spare in the engine compartment too. I'm sure looking even further back than that, we can find earlier examples of frameless windows and underhood spares.
