I'm really torn on that idea.

Take a family that is really trying to make it, and has a relatively efficient vehicle. No matter what, that doubles what they're spending on fuel -- what else gives: rent, food, daycare???

OTOH, higher gas prices make most people aware of their consumption, and can change habits. Fact of the matter, the trend is to pile-on debt with hopes that gas prices will descend. The big tax cut "stimulus" is on its way, so there you go...
