Chavez Cuts Exxon -- and us?
I'm sure we've heard that Venezuela's dictator -- I mean, President - Hugo Chavez, has cut supply to Exxon/Mobil in retaliation from some political action against his "National Control" of oilfields.
Is this the poke in the eye that Exxon/Mobil needs, or are we going to have to foot the bill as usual? Nobody has speculated yet...

He nationalized his oil fields the same way Bush privatized the protected forests near my house, home to several endangered bird species, for mining and logging industries. The big difference is Chavez gave them the option of leaving first, here the land was lost from the state without payment.
Now Exxon is suing them and the US is freezing assets of Venezuela. Unfortunately for us, our lawsuit for the forest was denied permission to continue.
I just want to put some perspective on world politics beyond what you get from Fox News. We aren't so different, we are worse.
Exxon won't let their record setting profits suffer from this. They will play the governments of the world and use this as an excuse to make even greater profits. Exactly what happened with the Iraq war.

I'm really torn on that idea.
Take a family that is really trying to make it, and has a relatively efficient vehicle. No matter what, that doubles what they're spending on fuel -- what else gives: rent, food, daycare???
OTOH, higher gas prices make most people aware of their consumption, and can change habits. Fact of the matter, the trend is to pile-on debt with hopes that gas prices will descend. The big tax cut "stimulus" is on its way, so there you go...

There is so much frivolous abuse of this commodity going on, even today, that I fear it will take something radical to effect change. I can't believe the total absence of any sort of energy use education campaign in this country, not that anyone would learn from it anyway....

The oil companies buy the text books for our children in some states. How did you expect this to turn out?

I did not know that. Also, I forgot to put the word "flagrant" in the first post, in front of "frivolous".
