Thanks for sharing. Kind of gives me more insight to how the gen 2 pause-iVTEC works. Unlike the HCH we have 2 stages. Having said that it seems something funky is done at idle as it sounds like a singer sewing machine vs a 4 banger.

So instead of using different cam profiles and using different rocker arms,it just rotates the intake cam forward or backwards?

Anything stand out at you for performance? I notice it said 91 Ron fuel. Myself and a few Insight owners have doscovered better performance in non eco mode.

Yes, basically

Also, anyone wanting to put a standard 1nzfe in a manual transmission tercel, corolla, etc......let me know.

As noted before, the top fuel economy performer on this board is an echo....and the tercels are lighter, and would be lighter still with an aluminum block engine.

I think load is more important, would need to grid tie or something (but if the power is out...)

Out of curiosity more than anything else (I'm not in a position to do an engine swap now, and I don't expect my engine to go 'splody or otherwise need replacing anytime soon) would you expect a prius 1nzfxe engine to bolt relatively easily up to the 6 speed manual in an 03 Pontiac Vibe GT (has the 2zzge engine), or would you expect that to take some custom fabrication and/or Toyota parts bin scrounging, or better to swap to a different manual trans along with the engine?

Also, you mentioned you can switch between high and low compression/displacement. Is that is electrically switched, and would a pwm controller or something similar be all that's needed to be able to select middle settings?

Edit the 1st: After thinking about it, my current engine has dual cam profiles (for extra power at high rpm), could emulating the prius engine detune be as "simple" as getting a new cam cut with a different 2nd profile, and putting in a way to manually switch to the 2nd profile, or something similar?

Edit the 2nd: I made a post in a different thread asking about and expounding on my 1st edit. That way there may be some hope (however slight) of keeping this thread on topic.

Doesnt the EGR system decrease the displacement similar to the cam timing?

EGR kinda chokes the intake manifold.

Just curious if this project is still on the road, also wondering if anyone has ever made drawings of the various XMSN mounting patterns from various ECO cars, I have often figured it would be worthwhile to encourage more swappers

I wonder if a prius engine would fit my Celica. Add a supercharger and/or turbo, and have one mode for FE, and another mode for MAX POWER
It would use a electronically controlled turbo.

It depends if the legislation about loosened emissions control on 90's cars passes.
